Historic Markers Make Appearance on Jersey City Streets

During the past two weeks, you may have noticed that historical markers have been going up around Jersey City. These exceptionally fabricated metal signs are part of the city's "Destination Jersey City" program under the direction of Suzann McKiernan-Anderson and Kevin Cherashore of MSD Visual of Paterson.
This particular phase, perhaps the most exciting since the inception a few years ago of the city-wide wayfaring signage program, highlights up to 26 local landmarks, including the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse, Sacred Heart Church, the Jersey City Woman's Club, Reservoir No. 3, the Hilton-Holden Homestead, St. John's Episcopal Church, Bergen Hill, Temple Beth-El, P.S. No. 20 and the United States Post Office, among a host of others. The text for the markers was written by Conservancy founder John Gomez; the photography was provided by Leon Yost. Former Jersey Journal reporter (and current JCLC board member) Dennis Doran wrote the text for a set of three-sided historical kiosks slated to be installed in December.
The Conservancy strongly supports the historic marker program and hopes to see additional markers for other landmarks worthy of protection and recognition.
