Historic Holland Street Clean-Up

Saturday May 3, 2008 ― 9 am to 3 pm

Holland Street

Meet at Holland Street under the stone Ogden Avenue Bridge (next to Riverview-Fiske Park), intersecting with Bowers Street and Palisade Avenue, Jersey City Heights. Rain or shine!

Organized by SAVE and the Riverview Neighborhood Association

Join SAVE (Sustaining Architectural Vitality in the Environment), the Riverview Neighborhood Association (RNA), Jersey City Heights residents, and students from the around the area as they help to clean Historic Holland Street, the crown jewel of the six remaining cobblestone carriage roads in Jersey City. "Through volunteering, discover the hidden beauties and treasures of preservation!" -SAVE

Cleaning tools will be made available; please bring work/gardening gloves. Pizza/water bottles will be provided for participants. PARENTS WELCOME TO HELP!

Rain or shine. Note: Students who successfully complete the clean-up will receive, upon request, community service forms from JCLC and RNA.

 


New Jersey City Architectural Tour

Sunday May 4, 2008 ― 1 pm to 3:30 pm

The New Jersey City 2008

Cost: $10; $7 for seniors and students with current ID. Meet next to the Katyn monument at Exchange Place, rain or shine. Please wear comfortable walking shoes!

Guided by documentary photographer Leon Yost.

This brisk informative 2½ hour walking tour covers the intriguing mix of old and new architecture where Jersey City's downtown waterfront morphs into the Paulus Hook and Van Vorst Park historic districts. We will walk where Henry Hudson walked in 1609 and claimed the area for the Dutch. We will follow this trail of history from the 1770s Paulus Hook fort to the 1830s Morris Canal to 21st century glass-skinned skyscrapers. Architectural styles will include Greek Revival, Romanesque Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, 60s Modern, Interpretative Modern, and Postmodern. We will observe award-winning adaptive reuses of historic structures that have acquired new lives with new modern functions. Many of the sites we will see are featured in the Conservancy's 2008 wall calendar which will be given free to the tour participants.

 


Restoration Tour of “The Beacon,”
the Former Jersey City Medical Center

Saturday May 10, 2008 ― 3 pm to 4:30 pm

Cost: $10.00, $7.00 for seniors and students with current ID. Meet at the new lobby of The Beacon. Turn into the main entrance at Beacon Way. Valet parking is $5.00. Metered parking is available on Montgomery Street. Rain or Shine!

Guided by Ulana Zakalak, restoration consultant for the Beacon.

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, Metrovest Equities and the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy invite the public to tour the magnificent restoration of the Art Deco former Jersey City Medical Center. This first ever public tour will be led by The Beacon's own restoration consultant, Ulana Zakalak, president of Zakalak Restoration Arts, LLC. Highlights will include the magnificent new lobby, the restored Broadway corridor, the Rialto Theater, and the former lobby, now the billiards room, complete with the newly conserved Allen George Newman bas-relief, From Myth to Medicine. Come see Mayor Frank Hague's office, now converted intothe Hague Poker Room, as well as restored lobbies and the Roosevelt reading room.Visit the unparalleled amenities floor which includes Club Aqua and the Grotto Lounge. The tour will also take in the unrestored Murdoch Hall, the setting for the movies Quiz Show and The Imposters .

 


Central Heights Tour

Saturday May 17, 2008 ― 1 pm to 3 pm

Krempa Manor

Cost: $10.00, $7.00 for seniors and students with current ID. Meet at the intersection of Bowers and Central Avenue by Capital One Bank. There is a municipal parking lot nearby.

Guided by JCLC Board Member Denis Doran.

This tour will explore the history of the Central Avenue commercial district and the homes of the merchants on nearby Summit Avenue. It will conclude at Pershing Field, named for General “Black Jack” Pershing, Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces during the Great War

 


Researching Home Histories

Have you ever wanted to research the history of your home? When was it built? Who used to live there? Or have you ever wanted to learn more about other landmark properties in your neighborhood? This workshop will give you the tools to do so by teaching you the basics of research in the New Jersey Room of the Jersey City Free Public Library, a treasure trove of Jersey City history. This is a FREE event; however, registration is required as space is limited. Co-sponsored by the Jersey City Free Public Library and the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy.

At the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre, Journal Square (across from PATH). The ceremony starts at 7:00 p.m. sharp! Cost per ticket: $25 at the lobby door.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2008, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy will proudly present its eighth annual PRESERVATION AWARDS CEREMONY in honor of those who have significantly contributed to the preservation of Jersey City's architectural and cultural heritage. Categories include the Excellence in Preservation Award, the Theodore Conrad Preservationist Award, the J. Owen Grundy History Award, the Preservation Initiative Award, and the Jersey City Legend Award.

Cost: $25.00. A tour of the historic Loews Jersey Theatre will follow the ceremony. Refreshments will be served ; entertainment provided by, local artist and DJ, Nyugen Smith.

Journal Square Through time

SAVE (Sustaining Architectural Vitality in the Environment) presents a one-of-a-kind student-led walking tour of the landmarks that grace the rapidly changing JournalSquare area.This year, tour-goers will be taken through restored movie palaces, opulent houses of worshipand streetscapes lined with Indian eateries, stores and temples, as well as the newly redeveloped American Can Company (CANCO). Journal Square as it used to be--long-gone shops, restaurants, banks-- will be conjnured from the past throughlectures and pictures.

 


Lafayette History Festival & Tour

FREE event co-sponsored by the Communipaw Avenue Block Association, the Afro-American Historical Society Museum and the City of Jersey City. Meet at the Rev. Dr. Ercel F. Webb Park, intersection of Van Horne and Lafayette Streets. Rain or shine!

Guided by Neil E. Brunson, Director of the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Society Museum, and Deputy Mayor Kabili Tayari.

Discover New Jersey's rich Dutch heritage through iconic landmarks like the former Lafayette Dutch Reformed Church and the "House of the Four Chimneys" mural inside the Art Deco-designed Provident Bank; explore the distinct vernacular architectural landscape of Lafayette, a largely intact mid-19th century industrial neighborhood where the names of African-American legends like Dr. George E. Cannon and Dr. Lena Edwards come to life.

Opening reception at 11:45 a.m. at the Rev. Dr. Ercel F. Webb Park, intersection of Van Horne and Lafayette Streets. Guided walking tour starts at 12:00 p.m. sharp and concludes at 2:00 p.m.; buses staffed with JCLC docents will be available for the duration of the tour. Closing ceremony from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Monumental Baptist Church, directly across from Webb Park. Historical displays and informational tables will be set up for the enjoyment of visitors. All events are free.
