2008 JCLC Calendar: The New Jersey City

Calendar 2008

The first decade of the 21st century has been a period of stunning growth and development in Jersey City. But it would be mistake to look at the recent development in isolation. The story of modern Jersey City is a story of decades of architectural and social innovations, some of which called upon the resources of the past, others which boldly established a new path forward.

JCLC's 2008 Calendar: “The New Jersey City” asks: What is it that has made the “modern” Jersey City? It includes post-war modern architecture, adaptively reused historic treasures and recent “ultra postmodern” edifices. It includes the monumental towers that grace downtown, the “new urbanism” of communities such as Liberty Harbor and public housing projects that have been built and rebuilt. All of these comprise the ongoing development of Jersey City, and interact with the city's past.

As usual, calendar viewers will be treated to the astounding variety of photographs and postcard images from Leon Yost and informative essays by Conservancy Board members and other historians. We hope you and your friends will enjoy viewing the calendar as much as we do producing it.
