Tour No. 1: The Lafayette Neighborhood Black Heritage Walking Tour with Historian and Community Advocate Jerome Choice

Walking Tour Starts at Liberty State Park Light Rail Station

Ends at Monumental Baptist Church, 121 Lafayette Street

Historian, Museum of Jersey City History board member and community advocate Jerome Choice hosts an enriching, emotional and personal journey, highlighting Black history and his life-long experiences in the historic Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City, originally settled by the Dutch over 400 years ago in the ancient Lenni Lenape village of Communipaw.

NOTE: This walking tour is the 1st segment of two, consecutive Black History tours on JCLC’s specially curated day of Black history and culture. Bus Tour Starts at Monumental Baptist Church, 121 Lafayette Street

Ends at JCLC’s Support Black Businesses Social at Lady G's Restaurant Bar & Grill, 269 Ocean Avenue

Preservation advocate and founder of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy (JCLC), John Gomez takes us on a journey to sacred Black spaces in Jersey City, including the Bergen Avenue church where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave one of his final public speeches in 1968 as well as an Ocean Avenue landmark founded as New Jersey’s first Black Catholic parish. Ticket purchase is needed for this tour; seats are limited and will sell out fast!
