Above: The Society for Industrial Archeology has been a supporter of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy’s preservation campaign for the Powerhouse since the beginning, in 1999, with our grassroots battle even appearing on the cover of the SIA’s Fall 2000 national newsletter — giving us the hope and confidence we needed back when it mattered most. Members of the Roebling Chapter of the SIA also assisted us with much-needed black-and-white photography of the Powerhouse’s interior soaring spaces and surrounding barren landscapes surreally occupied today by skyscrapers. These stunning early-1980s-era analogue images were used exclusively in our National Register of Historic Places nomination report for the Powerhouse, resulting in its landmark designation in 2001.
