Save the Powerhouse Walking Tour

Join the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy for an exploration of the Powerhouse neighborhood! Follow JCLC’s architectural historians to learn how this 200-year-old industrial district evolved into the vibrant and livable neighborhood it is today!

Powerhouse Calling by Shirin MacCormack

The Powerhouse is punk! The Powerhouse can twist and shout! This monumental architectural marvel has, since 1908, stood the test of time throughout decades of changing styles and rock legends as iconic as The Clash and Elvis! The fact that the Powerhouse still exists today — ready to be revitalized by adaptive reuse — is its most spirited act of rebellion yet. This elegant, gritty, industrial Jersey City monument, responsible for powering the PATH trains, has inspired a preservation movement, a plethora of artists, and the growth of an entire neighborhood. At JCLC, we won’t just “save” The Powerhouse. We’ll honor the Powerhouse as a community of counterculture stakeholders and caretakers, overseeing its restoration as it breathes new life and continues to anchor the district, creating relevance and inspiring an inclusive edge for its next 118 years!

And announcing our first Save the Powerhouse Pub Crawl on Saturday, May 30, 2026, 2-6pm! Book tickets below!

Preservation Month was initiated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1973 and has become the highpoint every May for historic preservation advocacy, awareness and appreciation in the United States. In the spirit of the National Trust, the nonprofit Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy organized its first Preservation Month in Jersey City series of walking tours, lectures, workshops, symposiums and other events in 2000, just a few months after its founding in 1999. Join the JCLC in 2026 as we continue our public preservation programming in honor of this important month and as we continue our Save the Powerhouse community preservation campaign!
